Pictures from ITW Chemtronics visit
The site visit to ITW Chemtronics on Monday went well. We arrived at noon to an excellent Southern Bar-B-Que catered lunch. Not a bad way to start. During lunch the marketing and sales team explained to us how the company works and how long they've been around (1950 I think).
The site visit consisted of seeing their manufacturing plant where they make aerosol products for the electronic packaging industry, solder braid for desoldering, and mats for removing fine particles off of shoes. Sue Max gave us a demo of the desoldering braid and a flux remover. To top the day off, we had our pick of free products. I was excited to get some silver thermal grease and desoldering braid.
Some of the machinery was over 30 years old, but have been kept because they are better than the machines of today.

All in all, it was good to see a local Atlanta manufacturing facility doing well in the competitive global electronics industry.

How to make a portable Nintendo. The first GTSMTA meeting
The first GTSMTA meeting was held on Thursday in MRDC 4211. Attendence was light due to the summer semester, but it was still a successful meeting.
After typical business stuff, we proceeded to take apart an original Nintendo console. We identified as many components as we could, but had trouble with a few. We need more Electrical Engineers to help us identify everything. Discussions about thru-hole technology vs SMT technology, thermal issues, assembly issues, and other technology issues were brought up. Alot of nostalgia was brought back for those of us who had spent hours playing the Nintendo as kids. Below are some pictures from the event.
Taking apart the NES
Here is the NES board. We were surprised to find thru-hole technology and no SMT components.
We weren't sure what the green and red components were in the following pictures. Any ideas?
Here is the NES board next to an XBOX board. Huge differences in technology.
